If you aren’t getting traffic to your site, it doesn’t matter how good the content and salesmanship is, there will be nobody there to buy anything. I talk a lot about SEO in posts like this one and why it is important to get your site optimized for search engine rankings.

One of the ways to shoot your site up the search engine results is by building links to your site, which is what I’ll cover in today’s post.

What is Link Building?

I have a friend who works in SEO services in Cleveland, Ohio who was kind enough to take a few minutes and give a little primer for my readers on how to go about building links to their site.

Link building is the process of acquiring or forming hyperlinks from other domains that point to your domain. For instance, right here where I link to Google.com, that’s building a link to them.

That, in a nutshell, is how it works. But how do you go about getting those links from other sites? One of the ways that a lot of SEO experts are using these days is by acquiring their own network of domains and using them as link farms to send links to their money sites. They call this a private blog network, or “PBN” for short.

Buying a lot of domains can be expensive, however, especially if they are strong sites that send out powerful link juice. Another method you can use is to buy links from people who own a lot of sites. There are a lot of sites out there where people sell their SEO services such as blog posts with links. You provide them with the anchor text you want and the URL you want it to point to, and they’ll take care of the rest. The price of the gig will vary depending on how powerful of a referring site it is.

You can also reach out to other site owners that are in your niche and do a link exchange with them. In this method, you are linking to them from your site, and they will link to you from theirs. This is helpful because the search engines value links from relevant sites, so if you make a connection with someone in the same industry it can be mutually beneficial.

Similar to that, you can reach out to them and ask to do a guest post. With this, you get to determine exactly what the content is, allowing you a little more control of the link’s relevancy.

There are a number of other ways to go about link building, but the above-mentioned methods are some of the more widely used ones. If money isn’t an object, building a PBN to have at your disposal to link to all your sites is the best bet. Following that, buying links through SEO gigs is probably the next best bang for your buck, since there are a lot of powerful services out there. After that, you can go with the inexpensive method of link exchanges and guest posts.

Following up on an earlier post where I talked about how to find a good web designer, today I’ll dig a little deeper into that topic to explain why it is such an important aspect for any web-based business or brand.

I was speaking with a friend who is involved in web design Greenville SC and he told me that the biggest thing that a well-designed website can do is connect the brand to its audience. There are a number of ways that this is accomplished.

The first thing is making sure that the site is designed for humans. Yeah, it sounds simple enough, but it can’t be overlooked. This has to deal with the form and the function of the site. It means making the site easy to use and the reader not having to guess how to get from one area to the next.

This can be done by making sure the appropriate things are clickable. It also can be accomplished by having a well thought out structure that makes it easy to navigate, with a menu bar on the top or in the sidebar that is very intuitive that any reader should be able to figure out where to go to get what they are looking for.

Aside from making it easy to navigate and having clickable items, you also need to make sure that the site is readable. Choose a proper font type and size that is easy on the eyes. Don’t go with Comic Sans, it goes without saying. Choose a typography that is easy to the human eye. If you are selling a product or service that is geared towards an older generation, make sure the font is big enough for those with less than perfect vision.

Your web design should also play to the readers’ emotions. This is done by giving your brand a personality. Have little surprises in there that would catch the reader’s eye. After they place an order, have a thank you message. Greet them with an unobtrusive pop-up when they visit the site and recommend something that you think would be of interest to them. In the rare case that a link brings up a 404 error, edit that error message to something humorous that they’ll remember.

At the end of the day, you should be able to take a look at your site, as if you were someone else (a customer or a client) and ask yourself – would I stay on this site? Would I make a purchase? Does it look welcoming and pleasing to the eye? If it turns you off, it will turn off any other reader.

Continued Interview Series With Omaha SEO Expert Richie Richardson

As you all know, I’m looking to take Net Mesh into new heights this year.  My goal is to make it one of the top trafficked Internet marketing news blogs in the world.  I have huge plans for it, so in advance of this quest I’m talking to as many SEO experts that I can possibly grab some time with.  You may have read that (many times over) in fact, and you can see my talks with Chris Walker, a company based in the UK called Gorilla Marketing, and even Micah Laughmiller out of Dallas.  Talking to so many experts in the field of search engine marketing has really helped me gain unfair advantages when it comes to how I’m going to make a run at being the best blog out there on my topic.

Today I found a very interesting person to converse with.  His name is Richie Richardson, and he hails from Omaha, Nebraska.  You may not think many SEO’s come from Omaha, but let’s face it, in the world of digital marketing, people can live and work from anywhere.  That’s just the beauty of the business of working online.  Gone are the days when most people get up, get all primed and proper, and get to work, sometimes with public transportation, and stay in the Ivory Tower all day long or working retail, standing on their feet all day.  Cyberspace has opened up an entirely new ball game and it’s here to stay.  The Internet is the best invention since sliced bread, in fact.  (That’s a fact, Jack.)
